Sometimes called “Missing Links”, these are the places where trains cannot run because lines have (at best) fallen into disrepair, or (at worst) been entirely dismantled. The question then is: could these lines be re-activated?

Many of the railway lines Michael Cramer investigated in his 2015 report in the European Parliament fell into this category, but my work – in 2022 at least – found just one missing link that was worth re-activating. As my analysis of lines I visited in 2023 proceeds, further lines could be added to this category.
