This day will cover some of the borders I had observed on Day 40 in the regular loop of the project.
It starts on the EuroCity train from Berlin to Dresden, changing there onto the Trilex Express train to Zgorzelec, across the Neiße river from Görlitz. At one level this is a good cross border connection – there is an hourly service with regional trains. But at another level it is absurd – the electrification masts extend from the Polish side to the middle of the bridge, but do not reach Görlitz! So this is a border with reasonable regional services, but with opportunity for improvement.
From Zgorzelec I will cycle to Černousy, a village on the Czech side of the border that has an hourly service via Frydlant to Liberec, run with single carriage rail buses. Extending this service to Zgorzelec would be possible – a single track line, not electrified, exists here – and it would provide a connection between Liberec and Zgorzelec/Görlitz east of the Neiße. But at the moment this is a cross border railway with a missing service.
From Liberec I will head north once more, and take to the bicycle between Hradek nad Nisou and Zittau – for this line crosses a 4km sliver of Poland, and where the track is in a poor state and speeds of just 40km/h are possible – even though there is an hourly regional service here. This one needs some infrastructure improvements!
Then it’s back to Berlin from Zittau, via Dresden Neustadt again.
