Today’s live text updates

And waiting for me at home: my friend Lewis Baston’s book about… borders 🙂

And the front cover is the France-Spain border at Cerbère that I cycled past during 2022 due to a French train strike

Third stop: Nuits-sous-Ravières

A tired Jon gets off, unfolds the Birdy one final time on this trip, and cycles home. And will be head-butted by Josette 🐈 within 30 seconds of getting there!

Second stop: Montbard

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, gets off and is incarnated as a statue in front of the station

First stop: Les Laumes Alésia

Vitalstatistix and Winesanspirix get off, and get lost trying to find Alésia

Ah. Now they’re warning us of dangers of not keeping an eye on our bags at all times - while stopped at stations

We’re in Dole Ville

A high point of petty criminality I tell you!

Also it’s the first time I’m on a TGV Lyria for years

Does this have any advantages over a regular TGV?

They bring a coffee to your seat in first class, but honestly 🤷‍♂️

Interrail reservations on it cost a fortune 😡 (€39! Who do they think they are? Eurostar?)

They annoy you less about labelling your luggage, so that’s good 🙂

But overall 🤷‍♂️ - it’s like a TGV with a grey interior

Vallorbe 🇨🇭

2 trains an hour, every hour, to Lausanne and beyond

Frasne 🇫🇷

5 trains a *day* to get to Dole, the nearest larger town

And the infra France side is fine - single track electrified line, decent speeds

And why this train?

It’s one of only 4 a day each way that crosses the Vallorbe 🇨🇭 - Labergement-Sainte-Marie 🇫🇷 border, and I’ve never taken this line

Given the amount of France - Switzerland cross border commuting it’s poor. But it’s France, so it’s normal
